EUROFIMA was founded on November 20, 1956 for a period of 50 years as a joint-stock company. It is governed by an international Convention which was signed by its member governments on October 20, 1955. EUROFIMA is sponsored by the Railway Companies of the European countries involved, and it's purpose is to support these Railways and other Railway bodies in renewing and modernizing their equipment. Activities are financed through borrowings or equity capital and joint purchases are encouraged.

From 1956 to 1991 EUROFIMA ordered more than 4000 locos, 8000 passenger cars and almost 100,000 freight-cars. Even 15 of the German ICE 1 locos were ordered by EUROFIMA.

In the Early 1970s the UIC - Union Internationale des Chemins de fer released a passenger car design that would standardise much of Europe's passenger rolling stock in the years to follow. This design is known as the UIC Standard-Type Z, and exists in two configurations...

Z1 Type
Air conditioned cars for international service, capable of working at up to 200 km/h. Windows are fixed so they cannot be opened, reducing the risk of damage due to pressure change when entering tunnels at speeds greater than 150 km/h.

Z2 Type
Non - air conditioned cars for domestic service, with opening windows. Maximimum operating speed is 160 km/h.
