Brisbane Phoenix Class Tramcar 554

A total of 155 Four Motor type Tramcars were built by the Brisbane City Council between 1938 and 1964. Trams were built in batches.
Each batch would introduce subtle changes to the style of the car i.e. a distinctive new paint scheme was introduced to cars built after 1963.
This model represents numbers between 547 and 554 which where built to replace trams that were destroyed in the Paddington Depot fire of 1962.
Because they were deemed to rise from the ashes of the fire, they were called the Phoenix Class like the mythical Egyptian bird.
Each of the eight trams had a Phoenix bird emblem attached under the end motorman's windows.
Cars were equipped with 4x40 hp AGE247 motors mounted in trucks built by the B.C.C. based on the Melbourne No.15 truck.
Trolley pole bases were custom built Melbourne W5 type and utilised the trolley wheel contact method.
Controllers were RC2 remote control versions utilising under car relays for control.
Nos 552 to 554 had extra guttering fitted over the windscreens and motorman's windows after many motormen had complained about receiving electrical shocks
from wet controllers after rain had trickled into open windows during inclement weather.
No.554 has been preserved and restored in running order at the Brisbane Tramway Museum.
