Combined Spreader and Dump Trench Excavator

Spreaders are an important part of the machinery employed in opencast lignite mining. Spoil removed by excavators from the overburden layers are transported by electric trains to suitable dump sites. Such sites are either empty spaces, abandoned lignite mine pits or coaled out sections of active lignite mines. Ashes from lignite fired power plants are deposited the same way.
In either case spoil or ashes were dumped from side dumping spoil cars into a dump trench. This particular type of spreader combines two functions. By means of a short bucket chain spoil is dug up from the trench and deposited on the conveyor belt of the spreader arm. From its end it is deposited onto the dump site. Since the feshly deposited overburden forms instable embarkments, it is necessary to have a long spreader arm, which can be swivelled horizontally. Neverthelless, there were accidents where entire spreaders slipped into dump pits.
Like other pieces of elderly lignite mining equipment, this spreader runs under its own power on temporary railway tracks. The tracks can be moved sideways, lengthened or shortened as required by progress of the mining operation. Once the tracks had been moved, operation of the spreader was resumed by digging a fresh dump trench.
The spreader represents the technology of about 1970. In modern mining operations it has been replaced by machinery running on crawlers, while spoil trains have given way to movable conveyor belts.
The spreader has been built as kind traincar. In the drivers mode full operation is only possible from the cabin. It was designed to function in conjunction with the spoil cars, the electric mining locomotives and the asset named dump trench industry. The spoil cars are dumping their load into the dump trench, from where it is removed by the spreader. Animated loads with both, spoil cars and dump trench are visualizing progress of these operations
