PKP WLAhxz G56 St.Warszawa

In the mid 1950s Polish State Railways were having serious problems running international passenger trains across the eastern border. None of the cars that operated on PKP had the exchangeable bogeys to run the train across the border on both 1435mm and 1526mm tracks. It was a big problem since the passengers had to leave the standard gauge train and switch to broad gauge coaches on the border. In 1956 VEB Waggonbau Gorlitz introduced their new Gorlitz 56 class sleepers that were the first to be built with the ability to switch the bogeys on the border. A large group of these cars were produced for Soviet Union and its railway system SZD. The interesting thing however is that PKP, Polish State Railways, ordered 6 units of this type too. The PKP WLAhxz was supposed to run on the Warsaw - Brest, Warsaw - Kiev, Warszaw - Moscow, Warsaw - St. Petersburg international trains, and served in that role for the next 25 years. In the years 1974-1978 they were removed from regular service.
