Over 2000 21t coal hopper wagons were rebodied at Shildon works in the late 1970s, about 900 of which were fitted with vacuum brakes to become HTVs. Used on coal and other traffics, most were withdrawn by the last 1980s, but a large proportion were further rebuilt as ballast wagons, forming the Clam, Rudd and Tope classes.
