NY&A GP38-2 Green & White #261

The New York & Atlantic (NYA) GP38-2s were built by EMD 1977 and delivered in '77. The GP38- 2s spent nearly 30 faithful years in passenger and freight service on the LIRR but by the late 1990's, the LIRR was looking to replace the GP38-2ss (as well as MP15ACs, FA1/2 powerpacks, F7/F9 powerpacks) for dual mode locomtives after testing 3 former New Haven FL9s. The first new passenger (DE30ACs) and dual mode (DM30AC) locomotives were delivered in late 1997. The 1970s era equipment were finally replaced in 2001 by the new engines, and were finally retired. The remaining GP38-2's that weren't leased to the New York & Atlantic Railroad were sent back to their birthplace of LaGrange, Illinois. The remaining 23 GP38-2s are currently owned by LLPX and are now equiped with dynamic brakes and other modern modifications.
