Big Bertha Loco 0-10-0 - MR 2290

This locomotive was introduced in 1919 by Midland Railways to assist trains climbing the steep incline of the Lickey Bank. It was a one off design and not allocated a class. Due to its size it was known as Big Bertha, perhaps after the huge cannon of the same size used in World War 1.

Big Bertha operated from 1919 until 1956 for Lickey Bank duties.

Big Bertha wore three numbers during its lifetime. The first was 2290 allocated by Midland Railways. Later it was allocated 22290 after incorporation into LMS. During the BR years it was allocated 58100. It was only ever painted black.
