NR C Class #505

National Rail C Class

This content is updated and rerelease with the kind permission of Rob Shaw. Rob Shaw's eula apply's.

The C Class diesel electrics entered service on the Victorian Railways in 1977 for heavy freight duty. Based on the GM-EMD'S SD40s of the United States, the C Class was the Railway's first turbo-charged locomotive the most powerful delivered to Victoria since 1940, when H220, Heavy Harry steamed onto the scene.

Unsuitable for branch lines with their high axle-loads, the Class soon made it's mark on the interstate freight corridors operating 'Jet' services to the New South Wales and South Australian borders. When 'through working' began in 1979, C505 and C506 worked the first freight service from Melbourne to Adelaide to ever complete the journey without a change of locos at the border. The C Class became a common sight on interstate tracks for many years after.

In 1995, the fleet was transferred to National Rail, to assist with it's power shortage whilst awaiting delivery of the now ubiquitous NR Class. The more powerful NRs soon dominated the mainline interstate corridors, and most of the C's were stored at Junee. C505 and C508 returned to service in National Rail livery, fitted for 'Driver Only Operation'. These units were returned to service in the Melbourne area, largely performing shunting duties.

The majority of the fleet was once again sold during 2003, and has been transferred to regional rail operator Silverton. The two locomotives refurbished by National Rail have seen continuing service on lease to Pacific National.
