Die BR 85 entstammt technisch dem Einheitstypenprogramm. Das Triebwerk und die Achsanordnung stimmt ausser der zusaetzlichen rueckwaertigen Laufachse mit der BR 44 (1E Gueterzug Lokomotive) vollkommen ueberein. Der Kessel stimmt mit dem der Reihe 62 (2C2-Einheits - Personenzug - Tenderlokomotive) ueberein.
