SAR Silos 2x2 (First Generation)

The first generation bulk handling silos where built during the mid to late 1950s for SACBH. These where built via a continuous concrete poor as a 4 cell structure using a vertical concrete elevator

NANTAWARRA
Built between June 1956 - January 1957 by S Haunstrup & Company (Same year as second generation style built in Paskeville on Yorke Peninsula)
Foundations of 23 feet depth
Concrte silos 100 feet tall and 40 feet diameter
Holding capacity of 420000 bushels
Vehicle receival shed located roadside with railside loading
Decommisioned 2004 in favour of the larger bulk handling site of Bowmans south of Nantawarra
Viterra advise the local community on 1st May 2023 that the silos would be demolished
Demolished 5th May 2023

GULNARE
Built in 1957
Approximately same size as Nantawarra with same design
Vehicle receival shed located roadside with railside loading

GLADSTONE
Built in 1957
Storage of 2500 tonnes of barley per cell or 2900 tonnes of wheat per cell
Approximatley same size as Nantawarra however design varies slightly
Vehicle receival shed sits on railside with overhead rail loading passing above

A similar but larger structure was built in Owen comprising of 6 cells instead of 4. Wallaroo has a large 4x4 complex of similarish design built in 1957. Other first generation silos where also built at Mallala and Redhill but the design is quite different and uses a horizontal elevator arrangement
