SAR Stone Station - Jamestown First Class Station

Jamestown is located in the midnorth region of South Australia about 207kms noth of Adelaide. It is named after Sir James Ferguson, Governer of South Australia. The narrow gauge railway was built between Broken Hill and Port Pirie to cart the ore from Broken Hill to be smeltered in Port Pirie and passes through Jamestown. This line was opened in 1891 and the stone station building built in 1885.

The station is a First Class Stone Masonary Domestic Style building, like many others built along the South Australian Railways lines. This station is larger than most with the additional of a refreshment room and kitchen to cater for the long travel on the slow moving narrow gauge lines. Additional rooms include an Entance Hall, Booking Office, Ladies Waiting Room, Luggage Room, Porters Room and a two Bedroom Station Masters Residence with private Living Room and Kitchen. An additional external kitchen was added to a number of stations including Jamestown, Terowie and along the Quorn line.

In the 1960s SAR commenced work on converting the Narrow Gauge lines to Standard Gauge and in January 1970 the last Narrow Gauge trains passed through Jamestown returning to Peterborough. With the new Standard Gauge lines in operarional faster servcies where available and the need for the regional stations had diminished. This station was closed and is now managed by the National Trust
