SAR Stone Station - Terowie

Terowie is located in the midnorth region of South Australia about 225kms north of Adelaide. The township was founded in the early 1870s to service the farming community ahead of the broad gauge (1600mm – 5ft 3in) rail line from Adelaide which arrived in 1880.
In 1881 a narrow gauge (1047mm – 3ft 6in) extension line to Peterborough was opened. The railhead became a major break of gauge location linking the Adelaide broad gauge network to the Peterborough narrow gauge network.
The township thrived during this busy era and grew to approximately 2000 people. During World War II US General Douglas MacArthur made his famous 'I Shall Return' speech on the platform at Terowie. A plaque on the platform commemorates the event. At this time Terowie was a staging camp for army personnel as well as a military prison
During the late 1960s a new standard gauge (1435mm - 4ft 8.5in) line replaced most of the ageing narrow gauge lines at Peterborough. The broad gauge line from Adelaide was extended to Peterborough, making the Terowie-Peterborough line dual gauge and Peterborough a triple gauge location. This led to a decline in the activity of the town which had until then relied on its 'break-of-gauge' role.
The station itself was a large facility with a design loosely based on the stone first class stations of the SAR. Overall the station had three platforms with a narrow gauge low platform at the station itself which was on the western side, a high level island platform in the middle with a narrow gauge track on one side and a broad gauge track on the other, and a high level broad gauge third platform on the eastern side. The island platform had a kiosk and the single broad gauge platform had a refreshment room. A foot bridge provided pedestrian access to all three platforms.
In 1966 a fire destroyed a large portion of the station. The main station and station masters residence were lost and were removed in the following 6 months. Ticketing was moved to the Guards Room.
The line was in use until 13th December 1986 when the last service, via the broad gauge line, concluded and by 1990 the track had been removed.
All the remains now is the Guards Room, Toilet Block and Luggage Area which have all been restored. The central passenger platform still exists although some of this was removed as time has taken a toll.
