SAR Stone Station Refreshment Rooms - Peterborough

Peterborough is located in the midnorth region of South Australia, about 250kms north of Adelaide. It was founded in the 1870s and grew into a major railway hub because of its location as a ‘crossroads’ for rail lines linking north, south, east, and west. The town was originally called ‘Petersburg’ until 1918 and became a busy centre for carrying ore between the mines in Broken Hill through to the smelter in Port Pirie.
The narrow gauge (1047mm – 3ft 6in) line arrived in the town in 1880 which led to rapid growth of the town including a hotel, post office, school and town hall all built by about 1885
Being a major cross roads the station yard included a substantial refreshment room. An original refreshment room was built as a wooden and corrugated iron structure but a newer was built in October 1883 based on a Victorian style. This services passenger movement east and west along the Broken Hill-Port Pirie line as well as the branch lines to Terowie to the south and Quorn to the north.
In about 1968 the refreshment room was demolished as part of the standard gauge project. A new station was built closer to the road which had refreshment services.

Included in this asset is the combined oil lamp room with the Yardmasters Office, mens toilets and a traffic store for ropes and otehr equipment.
