Newcomen Atmospheric Beam Engine

The Newcomen Engine was developed in the mid 1700s as a means of pumping water out of mines. The last working engine in England ceased to operate in 1923 when it was replaced by electric motors. It is still in situ at Elsecar near Barnsley. Although by today's standards the mechanical efficiency is very low, this engine represented the birth of mechanical engineering both in Britain and the world.
