WHR CNR PS West Highland Railway Paraffin Store
Although coal was the dominant railway fuel in steam days, paraffin was also extremely important, as it was used for illumination, not just of buildings where there was no electricity or gas, but also the lamps used for locos and rolling staock, as well as handlamps for shunting or examination, not to mention making signals visible at night.Standard WHR practice was to locate the storage away from the platforms, beyond the ramps - at Crianlarich and Rannoch to the north, at Bridge of Orchy to the south; in 2012, Upper Tyndrum's was in the Station yard. (I'm still looking for photos of the remaining stations.) Like many other WHR buildings, they lasted well beyond their original purpose : photos show that Rannoch's and Bridge of Orchy's were still in situ well into the 21st Century, while Crianlarich's was relocated to the garden of the Station Manager's house after the original coalhouse was demolished, and is still visible on Google.
