Wicker trunks were a common means of goods transportation in the days before pallets, as their woven construction allowed a certain amount of air circulation. Common uses were laundry, sports kit, theatrical costumes, smaller birds and animals and foodstuffs: this is a laundry version, belonging to a commecial laundry that would service washes for hotels, hospitals, schoools and sports teams, amongst others.
