Very much a once and future castle, Baltersan may have lain in ruins for many years but there's hope for a brighter future.
Not only is it up for sale, with planning permission already granted for restoration, but detailed architectural plans have been drawn up for such a venture, with the added possibility of a grant towards the project. My conjectural reconstruction is derived from a simplified version of the plans I came across on the web.
It would be a big task, but several formerly derelict castles in Scotland have already restored over the past century and a half, including the iconic Eilean Donan, star of may a calendar and chocolate box top.
Baltersan, near Maybole, is an L-shaped tower house, a common variation of the fortified dwellings that were erected as strongholds for powerful families from Mediaeval times, and are commonly designated 'castles'.
They must have been the skyscrapers of their day, towering over the tiny stone, brushwood and turf dwelings that most of the population called 'home'. As with the contemporary abbeys and cathedrals, one can only wonder at the craft and logistics that made such edifices possible, and fear for the the mortality rate of those who worked at high levels with heavy blocks of stone on wooden scaffolding.
