Building Granton Gasworks railway station pre 1975

Mesh and textures by tmz06003. With nightmode. This railway station building officially opened on 27 February 1903 for use only by Granton Gasworks Edinburgh employees. Services were provided by the Caledonian Railway for the Edinburgh & Leith Gas Commissioners. The station was an unusual design as part of the upper floors were positioned directly over the running tracks and platform face. Passengers would alight at ground floor level inside the building and proceed up the tapered staircases to the upper floor. They would then cross a substantial lattice footbridge over 8 tracks, then walk down the flight of stairs at the other end to reach ground level at the gasworks. Services ran from Princes Street Station until 1942 when Granton station was closed to passengers. It is in this form that the building is modelled in this asset. Note that the footbridge is not included and can be built from footbridge kit parts. The building subsequently found a new use as an office by Scottish Gas. Most of the tracks were removed in the gasworks around 1975 and the train access portals at either end were bricked up, the lattice footbridge was removed and a new access stair directly from ground level was built. In 1986 a mandatory external steel fire escape staircase was fitted to the south elevation which allowed the building to have a continued useful working life. The station was subsequently Grade B listed ref. LB45794 on 10 November 1998 and survives to this day a remnant of the once extensive Granton Gasworks. Planning permission was granted in 2020 to thankfully refurbish this historic building for use as an Enterprise Hub by 2022. There were 12 steam locomotives used in the gasworks, all built by Andrew Barclay. Numbers 1,2,3,4,6,7,10 and 11 were all standard gauge. Numbers 5,8,9 and 12 were narrow gauge
