NSW Government Railways 101 Class DMU (F)

Driven by economic needs and an aging steam locomotive population, the late 1950's saw the NSWGR import several Class 101 DMU sets from the UK for use on branchlines around the state. These railmotors had a lower seating capacity than the DEB sets, and were perfectly suited for the Cowra, Mudgee and Tarana services where a DEB set was often only half-full, and a CPH railmotor was often standing room only.

The 101 railmotors were generally considered a success by both passengers and railwaymen. Passengers enjoyed the quieter and cleaner ride compared to a poorly maintained steam loco, and enginemen enjoyed the benefits of not having to clean, water and turn their locomotive at each end of the branch. Encouraged by the success of the railmotors, the administration of the day continued its aggressive approach to dieselisation, leading to the demise of steam in NSW.
