NSWGR 442 Class Tuscan

Manufactured by A.E. Goodwin and introduced from 1970 to 1973, the 442 class made use of a variety of parts from the earlier 40 class locomotives which they replaced. The traction motors, compressor and auxilliary generator were just some of the components that were reused.

A popular locomotive with NSW crews, the 442s were nicknamed 'jumbos' due to their large size. Early problems with rough riding and shock absorbers were quickly resolved and the 442 class worked over the entire state with the exception of the Western Division, where they wouldn't officially venture until 1979. Jumbos were equally at home on freight or passenger duties, and spent considerable time on the Southern Aurora and Spirit of Progress passenger services, although they were never popular with Victorian crews.

Later years saw the class delegated to trip train and shunting duties. Withdrawals were originally intended to commence in mid-1997, however ongoing service requirements meant that the last remaining class members weren't withdrawn until 1998. A number of the 442 class are still in active service today with Silverton Tramway Co. Locomotive 44211 is also preserved at the Rail Transport Museum at Thirlmere.
