RMS Mauretania

RMS Mauretania 1907-1935

1907 saw the appearence of two gargantuam ships, the size of which was unmatched at that time: the Mauretania, and her sister, Lusitania. Within only a short time of entering service, Lusitania captured the Atlantic speed record. Between them, that record belonged to Britain until 1929, when the German built Bremen claimed the record.

Both ships were almost 800 feet long, and were 88 feet wide. Original specifications called for liners that were capable of 25 knots; Mauretania once achieved 31 knots (Although for only an hour). Mauretania's distinguished career drew to a close in September of 1934, after steaming over 2 million miles in peacetime service (enough to circle the earth at its equator over 80 times).

The Mauretania was demolished in 1935 in Rosyth, Scotland.
