CN U2g Northern

The Northern class is one of the largest steam locomotives to operate in Canada. The U2 class had 7 different sub-classes, A,B,C,D,E,F, and G. This is, of course, a G series. Each letter increment made a small change to the class, a small improvement here and there.

CN also introduced the very stylish U-4 series, with all the bits hidden under the streamlined cowling. Other than that, the U-4s were very similar to the U-2s.

Equally at home hauling passenger or freight consists, this versitile engine represents the zenith of steam technology for Canadian National. This particular class of locomotive made its appearence during World War II, and continued reliable service until the end of the steam era.

It was not uncommon for these engines to put 16,000 miles on the odometer per month, particularly after replacing the K5a Hudson class on the famed Montreal-Windsor pool trains. Their additional traction power allowed them to haul longer passenger consists while retaining the high speed passengers expected.

6213, which was used as a pictorial reference for the model, currently resides at Exhibition Place, Toronto ON. It is hoped one day this marvellous iron horse will be fully restored to operating condition.
