Pennsylvania Railroad - Bedford Division & Horseshoe Curve

Set in the 1920s, the Bedford Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad ran from the Pennsylvania/Maryland State Line to Altoona. Heavy coal traffic in the early 1900s and through freight traffic made this single track line a hotspot for freight traffic. Western Maryland coal bound for market in Philadelphia and New York would travel by the PRR. Pennsy connections include the WM, B&O, and Huntingdon & Broad Top.

The Bedford & Bridgeport Railroad opened from the Pennslyvania/Maryland state line north via Bedford to Mount Dallas (at the Huntingdon & Broad Top Mountain Railroad and Coal Company) in 1871; the Cumberland & Pennsylvania Railroad built a connecting branch in Maryland. The Dunnings Creek Branch, later part of the main line, opened from Dunnings Creek Junction (near Bedford) north, through Cessna, to ore mines at Holderbaum in 1873. THe Pennsylvania Railroad in Maryland was chartered in 1876 to build an independent connection from State Line to Cumberland, Maryland. The road opened in 1879 and in 1888 was merged into the Georges Creek & Cumberland Railraod and later became part of the Western Mayland Railway. In 1891, the Bedford & Hollidaysburg Railroad opened an extension from Cesssna to near Imler, and completed it to the rest of the PRR system via Morrisons Cove Branch. The Bedford Branch remained in complete operation until Hurricane Agnes in 1972, and trackage south of Bedford was abandoned by Penn Central. As of 2020, the line is opertaional as far as Claysburg by the Everett Railroad based in Duncansville, Pennsylvania.

This route includes the famous Horseshoe Curve, with mainline running from Johnstown to Huntingdon, the Hollidaysburg & Petersburg Branch, and the New Portage Branch, parts of the Cresson cluster, Tyrone Division, Bellwood Branch, and the Old Portage Railway. Part of the H&BT is missing.
