BR Class 42 Blue

D800 Warship (BR Class 42/3)
These Diesel-Hydraulic locomotives were built between 1958 and 1961 for the BR Western Region, following the failure of the NBL D600 Warships (Class 41). D800-32/66-70 (Class 42) were built by BR at Swindon with imported German Maybach engines, and D833-65 (Class 43) were built by NBL with MAN engines built under licence by NBL. All 71 locomotives were named, in alphabetical order, after ships of the Royal Navy.
Originally painted in all-over Green, these locomotives were employed on express passenger services across the Western Region. Later they also saw use on china clay and mineral trains, and were repainted first in WR Maroon and later in BR Blue, with yellow warning panels or full yellow ends. None survived long enough to be allocated a TOPS number.
In 1968 BR decided that the Hydraulics were non-standard and the D800s should be withdrawn, despite the fact that many of the class were less than 10 years old. Withdrawal from service started with the pilot scheme locomotives, D800-02, and D830 which had Paxman engines rather than the usual Maybachs. All were withdrawn by the end of 1972.
D821 Greyhound and D832 Onslaught survive in preservation, and both are in full running order. D818 Glory was used as a display locomotive at Swindon but was cut up in 1985. D821 was renamed Cornwall in 2001.
