SAR S 135 SG
The eighteen members of the S class were introduced from 1894 to 1904. They were all constructed by James Martin of Gawler and spent the early part of their lives on the Melbourne Express from Murray Bridge to Serviceton, the East-West Express (later to be the Broken Hill Express) from Adelaide to Terowie and other high speed passenger services. The S Class had the largest driving wheels (6ft 6in) of any Australian locomotive and they equipped this class with the ability to provide the SAR with a superb express passenger locomotive.
However, the progressive introduction of Commissioner Webb's
Big Steam locomotives from 1926 saw the S class
(and the smaller Q class) relegated to the Victor Harbour,
Willunga, Moonta, Morgan, Robertstown, Snowtown and Spalding lines.Their reliability and good running ensured they saw service into the late 1950's and early 1960's, the last one (134) being cut up in September 1961. S131 was specially painted and slightly modified for the Goolwa Centenary in 1954. S135 was used as the train locomotive for the Prince of Wales' visit in 1920. None have been preserved.
Model; S 135 is represented in a early 1953 semi clean condition with white tyres and gold valance lettering. Many thanks to Nick M for assisting me with this project.
