QR PB15 444
The Queensland Government Railways PB15 class was the most significant and successful of the locomotives designed in the nineteenth century. The design resulted from a need for more powerful engines for passenger trains. Initially designated as “Passenger” B15, they were later better known as PB15.
They spent many of their early years hauling important passenger trains around the state. With the strengthening of the main lines they were relieved of most of these tasks by more powerful locomotives. Later they were relegated to lesser duties on branch lines and in shunting yards. Engines attached to Wooloongabba and later at Mayne were used on “Southside” suburban passenger trains until 1968.
QGR PB15 525 was build by Walkers Lmtd with works number 89 of 1908 and was commissioned into service on the 1th of 1908 and was a SWD locomotive for most of its running carrer being shed at Warwick Roundhouse. 444 worked around the Warwick District. For many years it was the yard pilot, shunting engines and goods wagons around the main yards right up to Dec 1966 when it was transfered to Mayne to to work enthusiast specials around the network; travelling on now long closed lines such as Southport, Nerang, Crows Nest, Killarney. Around 1969 it was earmarked for the Redbank Musuem as part of QR's offical Historical collection while the rest of her class was cut up for scrap. In 1970 it was put on display at the Redbank open air musuem, and for the next 25 years it was at the pray of the elements. Until 1997 the musuem closed down and the stock was transfered to Ipswich Railway Workshops. In 2002 she was lovingly restored as a static exhibit for the new musuem which opened in 2003. Now she is pride and place at the head of the model goods train, but there is many talk of restoring her to operational condition once again. Time will only tell....
Model by Michael Gitsham, Bits & Textures kindly used from Greg Cash + Auran. Many Thanks to the others for support and beta testing for helping out make this possible. :)
