ex-colonial lock-up and keeper's residence, NSW

A small colonial (1860s) lock-up with a rectangular yard enclosed on 3 sides by a high sandstone wall. The fourth side is formed by a double-storey lock-up keeper's residence flanked either side by wings of holding cells. The small size suggests its function was not a place to hold convicted criminals but as a remand centre for arrested persons awaiting process before a magistrate.
As represented in the model, the gaol has been converted to another instituional or residential use in a mid-20th century NSW country town. Based on the old gaol at Murrurundi.
