LNER Gresley D49/2 - Apple Green (later)

The LNER Class D49 locomotives were designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for intermediate express work on lines where the A1 Pacifics were forbidden. There were three subclasses: D49/1 had Walschearts valve gear, D49/2 had lentz rotary cam valve gear and D49/3 had Lentz oscilating cams actuated by Walschearts. In later years, as route improvements allowed the pacifics over more routes and following the introduction of classes V2 and B1, the D49s could be seen on ordinary passenger trains and even goods workings. The last locomotive withdrawn by BR was Morayshire in 1961 and this loco is now preserved in Scotland.
