VR Harris M1 - 1956+
The First Series Harris Suburban Motor Car was a whole new design compared to standard carriage conversions like the Swingdoors and Taits and where to replace the aged Swingdoors and Taits.
They where built by Gloucester Carriage & Wagon Co from 1956 through to 1959 and where assembled at Newport Workshops, they where set for 80mph running and where fitted with Brandford Kendall 30A and 30B Roller Bearing Bogies, the new interior design allowed for higher crush loads compared to the Swingdoors that had compartments, only the back of the car is a compartment for smoking people.
90 of these motor cars where built numbered from 501 to 590 with trailer and backing trailer cars also built at Newport workshops, these cars orginally had unpainted window frames and rubbing plates over the front coupler, due to rust the windows where later painted blue, Harris cars where to run in 4 Car Sets permanently coupled as M-T-T-M along with another 3 sets permanently coupled as BT-T-M to combine them into a 7 car Peak Hour Set with an average loading of 1400 passengers, some where shunted as M-T-T-M-BT-M to create 6 car sets for peak limit stopper runs from 1970s, sets that run to Warrigul ran in 8 car sets as M-T-T-M-M-T-T-M.
Most of the Harris cars where withdrawn from 1981 because of the Asbestos scare going around which was the main insulation for these cars, some of the later overhauled cars had asbestos removed around 1970s and where in operation till 1988-89 and which by then the Comengs had entered service, most of these cars where berried in a waste dump due to Asbestos, None of the First Series Motor Cars survived.
