Christmas 'New' R Class Loco - 2011

Victorian Railways 'New' R Class Locomotive.

Constructed from 1889 onwards by Robinson Bro's South Melbourne the R Class was a light lines goods locomotive used for pulling goods around victoria on branch lines.

It's shorter length and smaller boiler made it a few tons lighter to the Y class main line goods, after a few years the R class wasn't what they expected and where too heavy for the lines they where built for and where restricted to heavier branch lines.

They operated up untill 1904, they had a boiler rebuild to 175psi with Y class cylinders and reclassified to RY.

In 1951 the last of the RY's where reclassified to Y until all where scrapped by 1970.

This is a fantasy model from a group of people who wanted to build a 'New' R class from scratch and based it of the Kitson design that was exhibited in 1888 with modern features such as dual couplers and airpipes.

Althought this is a fantasy loco of what could happen in the future there are already two groups out there building Steam Locomotives from scratch, N 441 Project Group and V 499 Project Group.
