BR WR Acton Yard
This is my take on the Acton Marshalling yard from the British Rail Western region of the 1970's. Acton yard actually contained three seperate yards, No 1 yard containing 4 through and 10 dead end sidings which dealth with down (westbound) traffic. No 2 yard containing 13 through sidings which mainly handled milk and West of England traffic, and No 3 yard containing 12 through and 1 dead end siding which handled up (Eastbound) traffic. Their was also 2 exchange sidings next to the TOPS office between No's 2 and 3 yards and some wagon repair sidings plus a siding serving the Foster Yeoman Aggregate Terminal. Marshalling of general freight ceased at Acton on the 24th May 1984 and from that time on the yard has just mainly handled trainloads of Aggregates. Finding information and trackplans on Acton has proved difficult but the no's 3 and 5 issues of volume 27 Backtrack magazine have articles written by Brian Ringer and were a great source of Information. Finally I have tried to get the Actual Yard layout as accurate as possible and ignored most of the other railway lines that ran close to the Acton yard.
