NYCTA BMT/IND R32 Subway Car

In 1963, Budd was awarded the contract by the NYCTA to construct 600 R32 subway cars (devided into two batches, R32 and R32A, later designated Phase I and Phase II). The cars made their debut in a special inaugural run held on September 9th, 1964, before properly entering service on the 14th. Starting in 1988, the R32s began to go through the NYCTA's General Overhaul Program (GOH). 10 cars were rebuilt by General Electric, while the rest of the fleet was done by Morrison-Knudsen. As part of their overhaul, the R32s recieved air conditioning. Due to the size of the AC units, it made it difficult to access front rollsigns, so they were replaced with flipdot displays.

From 2007 to 2009, the R32s began to be retired, with the GE rebuilt units being the first to go, followed by the Phase II cars. Phase I cars began to be retired in 2009, but this was halted when it was decided that the R44s would be retiring. The 2010s saw the majority of the remaining 232 Phase I cars serving the A and C lines. Slated for retirement in 2017 with the arrival of the R179 fleet, delays extended their lifespan to 2020- plans were then made to retain the R32s to backup service until the R211s arrived in 2022, but this plan was scrapped in favor of retiring the cars in 2020. It appeared that the cars had properly retired in spring of 2020, However, come summer, issues were discovered with the R179s and they were pulled from service- the R32s were brought back out to take their place, working the J and Z lines. The R179s began to return in September, which brought down the demand for the R32 fleet, and so in early October, they were once again retired, havng served the New York City subway for 56 years- the longest service life of any New York City subway car, and when active, the oldest rapid transit cars still in service, anywhere in the world.
