NYCTA R38 Subway Car (as delivered)

NYCTA BMT/IND R38 Subway Car
Between 1966 and 1967, 200 of these cars were purchased from the St. Louis Car Company, originally to provide extra trains due to service changes. Like their predecessors, the R32s, the R38 fleet was made of Stainless Steel, and arranged in married pairs. The last 10 cars built also featured the modern luxury of Air Conditioning, and proved successful in service. Between 1987 and 1989, the R38 fleet was sent to GE to be rebuilt, as part of the NYCTA's 'General Overhaul' program. As part of the overhaul, the entire fleet was fully equipped with AC- additionally, the end rollsigns were replaced with flipdot displays since the new AC units made accessing the rollsigns difficult when changing routes. The entire remaining R38 fleet was replaced by the R160, and between 2008 and 2009 the R38 fleet was retired. Almost all cars were stripped and then sunk for use as an artificial reef. Only one pair, 4028-4029, survives, and is preserved in operational condition by the New York Transit Museum.
