The Big Boy
Drive a 'Big Boy' locomotive in a 'free-drive' environment.
The Union Pacific 'Big Boy' locomotives, numbered between 4000 and 4024, were built by ALCo between 1941 and 1944, and lasted in service with Union Pacific until 1961.
The specification for the 'Big Boy' was to haul a 3600 ton (3300t) train unassisted from Ogden, Utah over the Wasatch grade and onwards at high speed to Green River, Wyoming.
This required a locomotive that combined both heavy haulage ability and high cruising speed. The resultant 4-8-8-4 design with large 68in drivers was one of the largest successful steam locomotives ever built.
