RC7 BlueX

The Rc1 entered service on the Swedish State Railways, Statens J?rnv?gar (SJ) in 1967, the world's first thyristor controlled locomotive. Built by Allmanna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget (ASEA); like many European designs it's ability to serve as a mixed traffic locomotive was an important consideration. Two years later improvements to the thyristor system and electrical filtering led to the introduction of the Rc2 series. In 1971 an order for 16 units of a 160kph geared Rc3 series was placed by Austria. Some members of the OBB Class 1043 were fitted with rheostatic braking.

From 1975 SJ took delivery of 150 Rc4s, and 15 were also supplied to Norway as the NSB Class el-16.

A need to replace ageing GG1s on the New York-Philadelphia-Washington main line, resulted in several AMTRAK trials of new electric traction. The Rc4 was tested among candidates from the USA and one from France, and proved to be the most outstanding. AMTRAK's AEM7 was built by General Motors Electro Motive Division under license from ASEA, and is a substantially heavier and more powerful version of the Rc4 with a maximum speed of 200 km/h.
