SR Drummond 700 Class loco 30315 (BR Black, clean)

The ungainy appearance of the 700 class was caused by the desire to add superheated boilers to a class of 0-6-0 goods engines to improve economy. Although the conversion in the 1920s did little for the appearance the locos lasted in this condition until nearly the end of steam in the 1960s. The new boilers involved extending the frames by 18ins and pitching the boiler 9ins higher than the original, all were superheated by 1933.

The 29 locos in this class were designed for goods traffic but were also used on secondary passenger services.
