In 1937 the London Midland and Scottish Railway designed and built a new streamlined Pacific locomotive to compete with the LNER while demonstrating that the LMS was a ‘modern’ railway. This was achieved by deriving the ‘Coronations’ from the earlier Princess Royals but used larger boilers, increased superheating and larger driving wheels. The result of these efforts was that it wasn't long before Coronation itself, had wrested the speed record from the LNER at 114 mph.
