During the years 1907 to 1920 130 locomotives of this type were ordered by SJ.The locomotives were meant for passenger and freight train services in northern Sweden, but also to the freight train service in southern Sweden. Max speed limit was set to 65 km/h. All locomotives were built with enclosed cab and coupled to an L tender.However, during the last actives years some of the locomotives were coupled to an A tender. 90 of this steam loco type were converted to E2 in the years 1935-1951.
Modelled loco E 900(1st built E type loco) is preserved as well as many other E types.

Under åren 1907 till 1920 byggdes 130 lok av denna typ till SJ.Loken var avsedda för person och godstågstjänst i Norrland, men även till godstågstjänst i södra Sverige.Största tillåtna hastighet 65 km/t. Alla lok byggdes med sluten hytt och tillkopplad L tender.Dock kopplades A tender till vissa lok under senare år. 90 av denna loktyp byggdes om till E2 under åren 1935-1951.
E 900 är bevarat som det först byggda E loket.
