Tasmania's Fingal Line TS12 - Layout

Updated TS12 version with expanded horizons and some corrections. The Tasmanian Government Railways Fingal line was built in the 1880s and ran 75 km (47 mi) from Conara Junction to St Mary's along the South Esk River valley in Eastern Tasmania. It connected the townships of St Mary's, Fingal and Avoca with the cities of Hobart and Launceston. For most of its length the line runs along the southern edge of the river flood plain. The line had branches to several coal mines - Mt Nicholas (closed 1958), Cornwell (closed 1964) and Duncan (opened 1956 and still operating).

In the early 1960s it carried coal, livestock, general goods, fuel, forestry and agricultural products. Passenger services were stopped in 1957 but passenger accommodation was provided in the guards van (caboose) of some freight services. During holiday periods a passenger car would sometimes be attached to a freight service.

The line is narrow gauge (3 ft 6 inch or 1047mm) but this recreation, set in the early 1960s, uses standard gauge assets. While simple AI operations are possible, the layout has not been optimised for AI. This layout has some high detail and uses Speed Trees. All assets used in this layout are found on the DLS.
