General Information The BHP Company had a steel works located at Port Waratah and cola mines in the Newcastle area. This was demolished in the mid 1990s.
The steelworks had an internal railways system of ninty kilometres of standard gauge and five kilometres of narrow gauge, 1067mm track. The steelworks railway system has it's own locomotives and rollingstock with the locmotives shunting the exchange siding at morandoo Sidings in Port Waratah. BHP coal trains formed by CXD coal hopper wagons were hauled by State Rail locomotives over State Rail Lines or the BHP owned Belmont line from the mines to the steelworks. These wagons were painted grey.

A yellow version of the wagons were used in other areas of the coal region of New South Wales.
