New York Ontario & Western Y-class 4-8-2 408 tender
Burton Flory drew up plans for a light 4-8-2 for the NYO&W prior to WWI, but was delayed by the war effort. The USRA did not allocate locomotives to the NYO&W. In 1922, Flory got his chance and ordered ten of the Y-class Mountains from Alco. Although often compared or confused with USRA Light 4-8-2's, they are clearly not. One, #402, received a booster and was re-classed Y-1. It was the last operating NYO&W steam engine into August of 1948. Engine 405 received sheet metal skirting and a maroon and orange paint job for The Mountaineer, was briefly re-classed Ya, and was NYO&W's attempt at luring back passengers during the streamliner era. Y's usually handled heavy passenger trains and fast freights. Tender for USRA Light 4-8-2.
