C&O owned 63 SD40's, of which the first 20 were delivered with yellow ends numbered 7450-7469, later re# 7550-7569. The SD40 can be said to have been the mainstay of the rail systems through the 70s and 80s, good pulling power with reliabile maintenance cycles.
