CB&Q Pioneer Zephyr - 9900 (Mars Light)

Chicago, Burlington & Quincy - Pioneer Zephyr
Car 9900

On April 4, 1934 the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 'Pioneer Zephyr' rolled out of the Edward G. Budd Manufacturing Company's Philadelphia plant and the world of railroading was forever changed. The three car, articulated trainset became the world's first streamlined diesel train.

The Q's president, Ralph Budd, wanted a revolutionary new train that could make short, one day runs on routes that had up to that point been unprofitable. Budd first selected the motive power - a new diesel engine created by GM's Electro-Motive Company. The engine (Winton 201A) was an in-line eight cylinder model that produced 80 horsepower per cylinder. After the engine was selected, Budd solicited bids and eventually selected the Budd Company to make the train itself. Constructed mainly of stainless steel, the Zephyr's body was the first to incorporate a number of remarkable innovations; including load-bearing tubular construction and spot welding.

The distinctive, shovelnosed Pioneer Zephyr was primarily designed by Albert Dean; an MIT educated aeronautical engineer who worked at the Budd Company. John Harbeson played a major role in the interior design, and Paul Cret (his associate) contributed as well. Chicago architects Holabird & Root acted as the Q's representative at design meetings.

After an extensive promotional tour, the Pioneer Zephyr entered revenue service on November 11, 1934; making a daily round trip between Lincoln, Omaha, and Kansas City. Originally a 3 car consist, a 4th car (40 seat coach) was added in June of 1935. The Pioneer Zephyr underwent a few cosmetic changes over it's 26 year history; most notably the addition of massive 'Mars' lights at the front and rear cars.

Another 9 shovelnose Zephyrs were produced before safety issues prohibited any future production. The 9900 made it's final run on March 20, 1960; ending a fine career that forever changed the face of railroading. On May 26, 1960 (26 years to the day after it's record-breaking Denver to Chicago speed run), the train was turned over to the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago, Illinois - where it has been restored to 'better than original' condition.

There are 2 versions of the Pioneer Zephyr that you can make with the included cars:
