In the end of the eighties the electric overhead has reached the border between Czechoslovakia and Germany on both sides. As the both railway authorities (former CSD an DR) was using different electric systems for their lines (15 kV/16.7 Hz AC in Germany, 3 kV DC in the north of Czechoslovakia - now Czech Republic), there was emerging a need for two system electric locos, to avoid the time consuming double change of traction on both sides of the border (Bad Schandau and Decin). The CSD and DR decided to order such a loco by the SKODA works in Plzen (Pilsen, where the famous beer comes from) as this manufacturer had wide experience in production of two system engines. The engines was delivered 1991 (20 Ex. for DR where it becomes class 230, 15 Ex. for CSD as class 371). After the merger between DR and DB, the German locos changed to class 180.

The engines are used for passenger and cargo trains mainly on the Elbe valley line (Berlin-)Dresden-Praha but also for the relation Berlin-Frankfurt/Oder-Poland. To the highlights in their services counts the international passenger expresses like the famous 'vindobona' Berlin-Praha(Prague)-Wien(Vienna), the Hungaria, Balt-Orient-Express, etc. In the cargo services the most important is actually the 'RoLa'-service, what means 'rolling road' between Dresden-Friedrichstadt(D) and Lovosice(CZ). The road trucks are rolling on special waggons, their drivers takes place in a coach , avoiding so the difficult road passage trough the border region. On the other end of this route the trucks are rolling off the train and continuing their way on the road.
