D&SL mallet 212

The Denver., Northwestern & Pacific (later Denver & Salt Lake) ordered the 200 class mallets for use on the steep grades of Rollins Pass starting in 1909. The first members of this class of very early mallets were originally built as all-adhesion 0-6-6-0, but soon rebuilt with a leading truck, creating the unusual (for the US) wheel arrangement of 2-6-6-0. Later members of the class were built with leading trucks from the beginning, along with mechanical stockers and superheating , which were added to the remainder of the class. They went to the D&RGW when it absorbed the line in 1947, and continued to serve as helpers until they were retired from 1947-1951. By this point they looked little like when they were new, extensive rebuilds having greatly changed their appearance to such an extent they were almost unrecognizable, instead looking like a smaller version of a'modern' articulated. The locomotive was almost covered in piping and appliances, with the distinctive DNW&P headlights long gone, while the tender received a 'doghouse' (brakemen's cabin) and high coal boards. None are preserved

These are quite small mallets by American standards, with small 55 inch drivers, engine and tender having a combined loaded weight of just 244 tons, and a combined wheelbase of just 73 feet. These 'pocket mallets' would work well as the 'big steam' of a fictional mountain short line.

This Trainz version depicts an engine built or rebuilt with a leading truck, superheater and mechanical stocker, around 1910-1912. It features selectable marker lights and animated marker flags on both locomotive and tender, sound script, animated tender water hatch and water load, optional smoke hood, and illuminated number boards.
