C420 - NKP

Purchased in June of 1964, this ALCo C420 was the last locomotive that the Nickel Plate Road purchased. Number 578 was a member of the American Locomotive Company's newest product line, the Century class. ALCo produced 131 C420's from 1963 to 1968. Number 578 was purchased due to replace RS11 559 which was destroyed in a grade crossing accident on September 10, 1963. Four months after 578 was purchased, the Nickel Plate was merged into the Norfolk & Western. The unit was then renumbered N&W 2578
