Woodhead

The Woodhead route from Hadfield to Penistone, overhead electrified at 1500 DC. The new single-bore double-track 5km tunnel opened in 1954 when the line was electrified. After less then 30 years of service, the tunnel and route closed in on July 17, 1981 with all services diverted via the Hope Valley or Standedge tunnels.
