Commonwealth Railways GM 2

The Commonwealth Railways were established in 1912 and ran for 63 years until their demise in 1975. Australian National Rail took over from then on. The Commonwealth Railways ran on both 4ft8 and a half inches as well as 3ft6 inch gauge.

Some famous trains the Commonwealth Railways ran were The Ghan from Port Augusta and Oodnadatta. The line was extended to Alice Spings in 1929.

The Indian Pacific and Trans-Australian were also hauled by Commonwealth Railways.

This is a representation of one type of motive power used, the GM class diesel electric locomotive. Introduced in 1951 from Clyde Engineering at Granville in Sydney, the first 11 units were equipped with 16-567B engines. The next 35 units were fitted with 16-567C engines.

All up 58 GMs were constructed with quite a few stored and/or operational with various rail companies around Australia.

This is Clyde GM class, GM 2 which is just about ready for the scrapper's torch.
