Tilia cordata and Tilia x vulgaris README
Tilia cordata, Eng. Small-leaved Lime, Finn. [metsä]lehmus. The tree is among the many
European leaved trees that have southern Finland as the nothernmost limit of their habitat.
The Lime was previously a valued source of natural fiber, but modern efficient forest
management practices typically weed any natural lime trees out before they reach maturity.
This example comes from a derelict park and is probably 150-200 years old.
Tilia x vulgaris, Eng. Common Lime, Finn. puistolehmus is by far the #1 Finnish street tree,
at least in the central and southern cities. The fact that the tree oozes out
sticky sap on warm days tends to make it less popular in private yards. The tree is a natural
hybrid of T. cordata and T. platyphyllos. Unlike T. cordata, the trunk is usually 'lumpy',
and sends off shoots that require yearly trimming, but the tree is known to be resistant to
city pollution.
