NYCTA R12 subway car
In 1948, the NYC Transit Authority purchased 100 R12 subway cars from American Car & Foundry. They have a half width cab at each end, with driving controls. All cars were single units, so they could be used in any arrangement (as opposed to other cars which were arranged in 'married pairs'). They were removed from service in 1981. They were originally delivered with wicker seating, which some later had replaced with fiberglass. Car number 5760 is still in use by the New York Transit Museum for fan trips. Car number 5782 was last seen at the 239th st yards, current condition unknown. They were delivered in two-tone grey paint with orange striping, were repainted red in the late 60's, silver/blue in the early 70's, and some received the white 'grafitti-proof' paint scheme in the 80's, though some wore red paint until the end of their service.
